CONSIDER: Have you ever asked God for something and didn’t get the answer you hoped for? One of the most challenging times in my life often involves a financial burden or a physical struggle. During these times, I cry out to God and ask for relief or provision. However, I frequently am discouraged when my request goes unanswered, or the response from God seems delayed. When I look at today’s scripture, I realize that my requests may be self-motivated and not Holy Spirit-led. Look at the word Abide. The word “abide” appears twice in this sentence, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you…”
One of the greatest gifts we receive when we place our faith in Jesus Christ is the privilege to have an intimate relationship with the living God. God invites us to abide with Him. When we abide with Him, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and receive Peace, Joy, and love. We receive the fruit of the spirit. See Galatians 5:22-23. When Christ abides in us and responds by abiding in Him, we can be confident He is with us. When I ask for things in His name, I must remember He promised never to leave us. He promised we have a new identity. He promised we have an inheritance waiting for us in Heaven. He promised that the work on the cross was finished and we are loved, known, and redeemed. As I abide in Christ, and He abides in me, I realize that the Spirit of God is at work to help transform me and share the good news of Jesus with others. When I ask for the opportunity to partner with God in His mission, I believe He does that. When we ask for God to use us for His glory despite our struggles, I believe He does that. When our hearts are aligned with God’s heart, whatever I ask will also align with what God desires. As you abide in Christ, ask for healing, provision, and whatever you wish, but remember, God’s will may be different than yours. When His will and my will align, all of those things will be done for His glory.
REFLECT:
What generosity habits have been forming in your life?
Do you give regularly to the local church?
Do you spend time regularly praying for missionaries, neighbors, and family?
Do you have the margin in your life to serve others and let them serve you?
PRAY:
Use these resources to help pray specifically each day.
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
