As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
CONSIDER: While you might not think yourself very wealthy because we live in America and there is always someone who has more money than you do, doesn’t mean that on a global scale, you are doing poorly. If you make $20,000 and are single you are in the wealthiest 10.2% of the global population. So, let’s say you make $20,000 and support a spouse and two children. So now that we have established that you might be richer than you think, what are Paul’s instructions to wealthy people? Paul starts with some don’ts: Do not be haughty. This means you shouldn’t let the fact that you have money make you arrogant or conceited, high-minded or proud.
