Day 30: Delighting in our Generous Lord

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV

CONSIDER: While you might not think yourself very wealthy because we live in America and there is always someone who has more money than you do, doesn’t mean that on a global scale, you are doing poorly. If you make $20,000 and are single you are in the wealthiest 10.2% of the global population. So, let’s say you make $20,000 and support a spouse and two children. You are still in the richest 37.3%  of the global population! If you need a reminder of how wealthy you are, pop over to the How Rich Am I calculator at givewhatwecan.org. So now that we have established that you might be richer than you think, what are Paul’s instructions to wealthy people? Paul starts with some don’ts:  Do not be haughty. This means you shouldn’t let the fact that you have money make you arrogant or conceited, high-minded or proud.

Paul points out that our identity should not be tied to our income or earning potential.  Paul then says don’t set your hopes on the uncertainty of riches. With this statement, Paul reminds us not to lose sight of who God is by letting money become our god. God is the one in whom we hope; He is where our security lies. Paul follows the don’ts with the do’s. Do enjoy everything God provides. Do good and be rich in good works. Do be generous and ready to share. Do take hold of that which is truly life. Paul’s instructions to Timothy are great words to live by. It is the way to view your money that is counter-cultural and yields results far superior to the results the world offers.

REFLECT: How do you feel about your financial situation? Which of Paul’s do’s and don’ts feels hardest for you now?

PRAY:

  • Pray a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has blessed you with. If you don’t have much, ask God to give you eyes to see all you have.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart for the do’s and don’ts you might not participate in. Ask Him to empower you to live out generosity and keep your heart properly postured regarding finances.

Praying as a group?

Leading others in prayer is a great step in making disciples. We want to celebrate your and their faithfulness. For each person that prays with you, we will add 15 minutes to the 40.8 days of prayer committed so far.
